Miami, FL, October 10, 2014 – The denim on denim funny man is prepping for a return to your small screen very soon and he will be staying within the NBCUniversal family.
The former “Tonight Show” host will take his talents to CNBC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show will air regularly in primetime as opposed to the late-night landscape that Leno dominated for many years at parent network NBC.
The show will center around Leno’s much-publicized love affair with cars.
A start date has not yet been decided at this point. No other details have been released pending completion of the contract, though executives confirmed the show would not be comedy-based.
We have had the opportunity to sit down with Jay twice in the last few years and spent time with him at his garage and both times were very memorable for us, for his passion for the automobile, humbleness and his friendly person make him a great asset to the automotive industry.
Interviewing Jay his love of being in his garage is apparent. He has housed part of his enormous collection of cars and motorcycles in an old airplane hangar at the Burbank airport and spends hours every weekend working alongside mechanics restoring vintage vehicles.
Time will tell but we suspect this new show would somehow maintain the format that Jay has been producing with Jay Leno’s Garage.
There would have to be a bit more meat to stretch it out for TV though but that would be a very easy task for an entertainer with Jay’s talents. There is little doubt his many fans, car enthusiasts and Jay enthusiasts, will be happy to see Jay return to TV, this time with all his love, passion and knowledge of the car industry!
Leno has maintained his comedy career as well, making regular stand-up appearances around the country, as he has always done.
He has also turned up as a guest in several places, including on his friend Jerry Seinfeld’s web series, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” as a presenter at this year’s Emmy Awards, and even in a cameo in a parody of “House of Cards” on Jimmy Fallon’s show (where he pushed Fallon’s Frank Underwood character in front of a train, with a finishing line: “Remind me to send him a thank-you note.”)
Jay’s personal rep, Dick Guttman, told us that he hasn’t been in touch with his client since the stand-up’s most recent USO Tour of Afghanistan. However, he said it would be a good get for the channel based on the ratings for “Jay Leno‘s Garage: The Ultimate Car Week,” which aired earlier this year on CNBC.
The 64-year-old host has been approached by CNN, A&E, History and Tribune stations but Leno wants to remain faithful to the NBC brand the network that employed him for 22 years at The Tonight Show.
Leno, who will receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in Washington on October 19, has never lead on that he would completely vanish from show business.
So this move, if it came to fruition, wouldn’t be a total surprise. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has said, “Nothing would make me happier than to find ways to keep him involved with this network. That’s really up to him.”
Leno passed the “Tonight Show” torch to Jimmy Fallon in February, a succession that has gone significantly smoother than the hand-off to Conan O’Brien in 2009.
