SAN DIEGO, April 18, 2015 – As King’s Landing prepares for a funeral, elsewhere in Westeros several characters face decisions about their future in the second episode of Season 5 on “Game of Thrones” this week.
Arya Stark arrives in Braavos and finds The House of Black and White to learn what awaits her there. Recall how Arya came to be there in the first place. The assassin Jaqen H’ghar offers to take Arya to Braavos to join the Faceless Men, but Arya declines to continue looking for her family. Jaqen gives her a coin, and tells her to show the coin to a Braavosi and say “Valer Morgulis,” or “All men must die.” The Faceless Men of Braavos are greatly feared. They have the seeming ability to change their appearance at will.
After Arya left The Hound to die at the end of Season 4, she sees a ship about to sail and tried to book passage. When she learns it is bound for Braavos, she produces the coin, speaks the words, and now she is at the gate of the House of Black and White.
Should Arya walk through those doors?
Ellaria Sand wants revenge for Prince Oberyn’s death, and while back home in Dorne she goes about finding a way to make it happen. We get to meet Prince Oberyn’s brother, Prince Doran Martell. Make no mistake, Prince Doran is just as dangerous in many ways as his brother.
Myrcella Baratheon is also in Dorne, and her safety may be compromised because of the role her mother Cersei played in seeing Oberyn killed. Cersei fears her daughter may become the object of the Martell famiily’s anger. But the Martells may want to carefully consider throwing away their alliance with the Lannisters.
Stannis Baratheon has a serious talk with Jon Snow. Stannis thinks he has an offer Jon Snow won’t be able to refuse. In Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen is also tempted by an offer she isn’t sure is in her best interests. And if the promotional photos are to be taken at face value, Daenerys will be reunited with her wayward dragon, Drogon, who flew away after scorching and eating his fill of the local sheep.
Podrick Payne and Brienne of Tarth run into trouble out on the road and are forced to confront it.
“Game of Thrones: Season 5, Episode 2, “The House of Black and White,” airs Sunday, April 19, at 9 p.m. on HBO (with numerous repeats of the episodes throughout the week).
