SAN DIEGO, July 21, 2017 – It’s a woman’s world these days in Westeros, and it is the women driving the major storylines this season on “Game of Thrones.”
Add one more woman to the party. At the GoT panel discussion at Comic-Con International in San Diego Friday, a new trailer sent fans into a whirlwind of speculation. It previews several scenes we may not see for a few more weeks. Guess who’s back? The Red Priestess, Melisandre, and she’s got the ear of the Mother of Dragons.
This adds to a screamingly brief Episode 2 trailer for this week’s episode, “Stormborn.”
Stormborn is another reference to Danaerys Targaryen. It’s worth digressing for a history lesson. According to the the original novels, Danaerys’ mother Queen Rhaelle was sent by the “Mad King” Aerys Targaryen II from King’s Landing to Dragonstone along with older brother Viserys for their safety. Dany was born during a raging storm, and acquired the alias “Danaerys Stormborn.”
[button color=”” size=”” type=”square_outlined” target=”” link=””]“No squall could frighten Dany, though. Daenerys Stormborn, she was called, for she had come howling into the world on distant Dragonstone as the greatest storm in the memory of Westeros howled outside, a storm so fierce that it ripped gargoyles from the castle walls and smashed her father’s fleet to kindling. -A Song of Ice and Fire: A Storm of Swords.”[/button]
It certainly saved their lives. You can say Danaerys has been living a stormy existence ever since. But she has always survived. Now she faces the biggest storm of all, the impeding battle for the Iron Throne, and beyond this, the confrontation with the White Walkers.
There are more portents in “Game of Thrones” than Shakespeare ever dreamed of, and it gives fans plenty to chew on.
As Episode 1 concluded, Danaerys and Tyrion Lannister were about to beginning planning their assault on King’s Landing. The newly released trailer informs us that Melisandre is now advising The Mother of Dragons after she was banished by Jon Snow. “I believe you have a role to play – as does another,” she tells her. Is it Jon Snow?
We have it confirmed after years of speculation Snow is also a Targaryen, and we know he and Dany (who is his aunt) cross paths and he wants to work with her against the White Walkers. But an alliance with Danaerys is going to be a hard sell for Snow’s contingent. “A Targaryen cannot be trusted.” Her father was the “Mad King” who lost the family hold on the Iron Throne largely due to his own actions. The Targaryens have produced generations of inbred children as they find incest perfectly acceptable. Like father, like daughter? And just how close will she get to Jon, hmm?
Cersei isn’t exactly in her right mind, either. She isn’t about to let go of the Iron Throne without a fight, and she’s going to get one. Brother and father of her now deceased children Jaime Lannister doesn’t seem completely on board. There are all kinds of theories about Cersei’s fate. The gypsy’s prophecies from her childhood have all come true so far, with just one prophecy left: she will die at the hands of her younger brother. Cersei always believed it would be Tyrion. But it could be Jaime, too.
Sansa Stark is becoming a power player in her own right. She’ll certainly have something to say, particularly if and when is reunited with her “husband,” Tyrion. We all know Littlefinger isn’t going to like that much. Watching Tyrion and LIttlefinger in a battle of wits is almost more than we all deserve.
After Arya Stark made her badass presence known at the start of the season by taking out all the remaining Frey loyalists, she’s going to work her way through the rest of her assassination list. Cersei is one of her remaining targets, and so is Melisandre. There’s going to be some serious voodoo going down there.
One more welcome sighting we have to mention: in the Comic-Con trailer, look for Lady Olenna Tyrell throwing in with Danaerys. Ellaria Sand AKA Martell comes with the deal, and we are sure to spot Varys who’s helped broker this alliance though neither needed a lot of convincing.
In the Comic-Con released trailer, Euron Greyjoy also returns, and we know from the episode synopses for this season, he’s got a gift for Cersei – a gift she returns next week in Episode 3. What is it?
Euron’s sister, Yara, has allied herself with Danaerys, and this sibling division of alliances could prove more meaningful than we know. Yet another strong woman leader who’s got a role to play, and Yara doesn’t color inside the traditional gender lines. It opens up plenty of … possibilities.
Preview columns could run longer than a GOT chapter, so let’s talk about it as we watch on Sunday. What clues and portents are you keeping your eye on? Tell us.
