WASHINGTON, August 23, 2014 – Nominated for 17 Emmy Awards, Game of Thrones has already pocketed 5 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, boding good things for the wildly popular show come Monday nights Emmy Award Ceremonies. The awards most anticipated for fans are

  • Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series -Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series – Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister
  • Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series- Diana Rigg as Lady Olenna Tyrell
  • Outstanding Drama Series

For fans of the story, one of the most exciting aspects of watching, or reading, is never knowing if, or when, a favorite character will be killed off. Some of the most memorable shows are those where characters are brutally killed:

Game of Thrones Favorite Episodes

  • Baelor (2011) – King Joeffrey Ned’s Starks execution and the episode ends with daughter Arya watching her father’s head get chopped off.
  • Fire and Blood (2011) – The funeral of Dragos and the Birth of the Mother of Dragons
  • Blackwater (2012) – Stannis has arrived at King’s Landing. The battle has come! (55 mins.)
  • And Now His Watch Is Ended (2013) – Jamie Stark loses his hand, Daenerys Targaryen frees the unsullied
  • The Rains of Castamere (2013) – The Red Wedding is the end of Catelyn and Robb Stark in one of the most brutal shows of the series.
  • Purple Wedding (2014) – The marriage and death of King Joeffrey. Long live the king!
  • Prince Oberyn vs. The Mountain (2014) – After the Red Wedding massacre, this episode had one of the most tragic deaths – the killing of Prince Oberyn by The Mountain left us all gasping for breath – not only for the loss of a favorite character, but the brutality of it.

“Game of Thrones” author George R. R. Martin enjoys his reputation for brutally ending the lives of his characters and recently he revealed it’s only going to get worse from here. Martin has said that as the various groups in GOTs move closer together in their quests for the Iron Throne, and more characters begin to cross paths, it is probable that the body count will rise.

“I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill,” Martin said at a recent event. “Sometimes there’s only one character who’s my eye in a particular location, and if I kill that character, everything going on in that particular subplot is going to be lost.”

“The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that. And now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in. The viewpoint characters are meeting up with each other and being in the same point at the same time… Which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.”

As this final season nears the thought of seeing the Seven Kingdom’s converge is nothing short of exciting however as these beloved characters through the planned final installment in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series, “A Dream of Spring,” you probably shouldn’t be too optimistic about any reunions — because, according to Martin, some of the characters simply won’t make it.
