SAN DIEGO, June 15, 2017 – Before everyone gets wound up about the announcement confirming MMA champion Conor McGregor and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather will fight in late August, boxing fans needs to remember this.

There is a REAL fight this week that actually means something.

Undefeated light heavyeweight champion Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) of the U.S. wants to prove his defeat of Sergey Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) of Russia was not a gift from the judges. Kovalev wants revenge for what he considers a robbery.

Both are in Las Vegas ahead of their fight with a whole lot of baggage and serious personal animosity on both sides, making for what everyone hopes will be another competitive fight.

The final news conference is scheduled today at 4 pm ET/1 pm PT. Forget about the other nonsense in August and watch the final news conference right here.

it would be a shame if the announcement of the August 26 matchup takes attention away from this significant bout with a lot at stake. This fight will prove something about the first fight, no matter which way it goes.

Ward, who won Kovalev’s WBA, WBO, and IBF belts, knows not everyone saw the first fight outcome the way the three judges did. Ward is weary of defending himself from questions about the legitimacy of the win. Ward has a fair point here.

Kovalev and his team including promoter Kathy Duva, manager Egis Klimas, and trainer John David Jackson believe the judges’ cards should have gone Kovalev’s way and a lot of boxing media agree with them. Kovalev’s initial disappointment has transformed into a lust for revenge. He insists he only lost because he was overtained and not at his best, and with correct preparation he will take advantage of what he learned the first time.

The promotion is struggling to sell tickets and PPVs. Promoters can hardly afford to have the August 26 circus draw attention away. Look for today’s news conference to take things up a notch – IF they do it right.

The championship event takes place Saturday, June 17 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Tickets for Ward-Kovalev 2: “The Rematch” are available on and at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Box Office.
