WASHINGTON. This week, more than 300 newspapers simultaneously published editorials pushing back against President Trump. This openly organized fake news brigade focused on what they view as the president’s continuing war against a free press.
“This dirty war on the free press must end,” demanded Marjorie Pritchard, editorial page deputy managing editor of the Boston Globe. “It calls for urgent action by those committed to free speech and the free press to stand against a White House and its allies who are bent on eroding a pillar of an informed democracy.” Unsurprisingly, the Globe was the newspaper that spearheaded this latest anti-Trump stunt by the fake news brigade.
Is the president trying to erode a pillar of an informed democracy? Or a fake news brigade?
In response, Trump tweeted,
“There is nothing that I would want more for our Country than true FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. The fact is that the Press is FREE to write and say anything it wants, but much of what it says is FAKE NEWS, pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people. HONESTY WINS!”
Since Trump is a businessman and not a politician, he consistently appears unconcerned with political correctness. This makes him anathema to the fake news brigade. But as a New Yorker from Queens, Trump is abrupt, direct and impatient with nonsense. He does not pull any punches. But in simplifying often complex issues, he frequently risks being misunderstood. Often willfully misunderstood. But regarding his notion of “fake news,” what exactly is the president trying to say?
When Trump talks about fake news, he generally refers to reporters and reporting that fail to report the news objectively. Instead, they prefer to editorialize and “report” the news through a biased lens that consistently tilts towards left-wing Democrat dogma. Numerous instances of this strong bias appear daily in the mainstream media (MSM) where biased reporting is clear for all to see.
Need an example?
A simple example of this bias appears frequently in the financial press. It arises whenever biased reporters discuss the current state of the American economy.
No matter how they spin the data, the US economy appears historically strong and getting better all the time. Today’s robust economy results primarily from two drivers, one well known, the other not so much.
- The benefits of the massive GOP corporate and individual tax cut legislation have become obvious to all.
- A less well known factor: Trump’s relentless termination of counterproductive regulations. Plus his administration’s trimming of Dodd/Frank excesses and strong support for the historic GOP tax cut.
Fake news: Obama somehow gets credit for today’s economy.
Trump’s had a huge role in pushing through these major economic victories for American corporations and individuals. But the MSM falsely credits President Obama’s policies for driving our current high growth economy onward. By any reasonable objective, this clearly qualifies as fake news. Neither Obama nor his administration ever made economic growth a priority over his eight years in office.
Obama’s top economic priority was to cure perceived social injustices by redistributing income and services with confiscatory tax and spending policies. Economic growth slowed to a crawl as a result. And the anemic recovery that got underway after the peak of the Great Recession occurred in spite of, rather than because of Obama’s redistributive policies.
Remember that Obama was the only president in America history to serve his entire term in office without having at least one year in which economic growth sustained economic growth of at least 3 percent. “2 percent growth is the new normal,” Obama’s advisors told us again and again. Obama did not care about economic growth. Crediting Obama for today’s robust economic growth is, quite simply, fake news. But it suits the pro-Obama, anti-Trump narrative of the fake news brigade, so it’s the only news the public gets.
In order for American voters to make informed decisions, we must gain unfettered access to accurate information. When the American media publishes or broadcasts inaccurate and/or biasedstories, the public can, by and large, only make decisions based on incorrect or false information. Trump says this puts the MSM in the same class as the Russians and their own continuous misinformation campaign. Similar to the Russians, the fake news brigade has become an enemy of the American people.
Mueller’s never-ending investigation of Trump is a witch hunt.
Another supposedly controversial Trump position is that the ongoing, open-ended Mueller investigation of his presidential campaign is nothing more than a witch hunt. Trump’s opponents claim he is trying to discredit the investigation because he is hiding illegal activities from the special prosecutor. But Trump knows there was no illegal activity on his part. To the contrary, there is plenty of evidence indicating conclusion between his opponent, the DNC and the Russians as well in engineering fake documentation to derail his campaign. Worse, this has now extended to his presidency as well.
Instead of examining clear cut, hard evidence showing his opponent did indeed collude with the Russians, Mueller and his 100 percent biased, pro-Democrat legal staff are hunting for some thin shred of damning evidence against President Trump. Evidence that, for all intent, apparently does not exist.
The dictionary defines a witch hunt as “an attempt to find and punish a particular group of people who are being blamed for something, often simply because of their opinions and not because they have actually done anything wrong.”
Since Trump did nothing wrong, the Mueller investigation of Trump and his campaign has clearly become a witch hunt. Trump quite logically believes Mueller should investigate those people and places where the evidence shows illegal activity. It has been clear for some time that the illegal activity was either conducted by or promulgated by Trump’s opponents.
Trump encourages a free press.
As noted, President Trump is strongly in favor of a free press. However, a truly free press comes with tremendous responsibilities. Reporters and even opinion writers who disagree with Trump’s policies have the freedom to write whatever they want. But the press also has a duty to be responsible, report accurately and express opinions based on objective analyses, not the quasi-religious dogma of one political party or the other.
Americans expect news to be reported factually and opinions to have sound logic behind them. Instead, the MSM fake news brigade seems to have lost its way. Well over 90 of reporting on Trump and his administration is negative. Even verifiable facts are twisted out of shape to support the dogmatic positions of an increasingly left-wing Democrat party.
The actively dishonest anti-Trump narrative foisted daily on the American public by the fake news brigadeis extraordinarily very dangerous to our American democracy. Only genuine enemies of the US would spread false facts to support false points of view and dishonest policy positions. Only active enemies of American democracy would deliberately bias a politically motivated investigation supported by clearly fake documentation with the goal of “resisting” and possibly removing a president duly elected by an electoral majority of the American people.
Trump’s bluntness: Far more accurate than fake reporting on the fake Russia “collusion” scandal
While President Trump does not express his positions in a politically correct manner, he is right to do so. That’s particularly true with reference to the fake news barrage thrown daily at the American people by the fake news brigade. Their unending stream of false news and inaccurate information has truly made them the enemy of the people.
As it extends to Mueller’s investigation of Trump for his nonexistent “collusion” with Russian interest during his campaign, Washington’s legal, governmental and MSM fake news circus looks more like a coordinated witch hunt every day it continues.
