ComiCon hosts TV Series Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story (schedule)

Written By | Jul 7, 2014

WASHINGTON, July 7, 2014 – San Diego ComicCon fans and TV watchers are falling in love with horror shows based on graphic novels, novels and other fiction. The Walking Dead, the popular AMC zombie series is based on a comic book of the same name. HBO’s True Blood is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Alan Ball.

The Penny Dreadful brought 19th Century fictional stories to the people, installments appearing weekly at a cost of one penny each. Showtime’s Penny Dreadful reminds us of that bit of history in their weekly horror romp based on the stories of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Characters in the show include such wonderful personas as Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing (David Warner), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) and his monster played by Rory Kinnear, Renfield, and Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcom Murray, Mina Harker’s father. Eva Green plays a delightfully possessed Vanessa Ives.

Taking on the role of the audience is Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) a brash, daring “American” show cowboy who is showing us some very complicated elements to his personality. However we like to think he is the one that is normal in this cast of abnormality.

Penny Dreadful cast makes its Comic-Con debut on Thursday, July 24th putting the Showtime and Penny Dreadful brand on lanyards worn by convention goers. Featured panelists include stars Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway and creator/writer/executive producer John Logan. Aisha Tyler will moderate.

American Horror Story (FX), one of the ever popular anthology series, or returning show that features a new self-contained story arc every season will be appearing at the San Diego ComiCon. Expected to appear are Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson. Executive producer Tim Minear will also be part of a panel schedule for Saturday, July 26.

The show’s fourth season will be set in 1950s Jupiter, Florida and will look behind the curtin of American freak shows. The repertory cast, which has included notable actors such as Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Dylan McDermott and Kathy Bates, has appeared in three story arcs: 2011’s “Murder House”; 2012-13’s “Asylum”; and 2013-14’s “Coven.” American Horror Story: Freak Show will air this fall and conclude in 2015.
