WASHINGTON, May 18, 2017 ⏤ The Democrats and the mainstream media (MSM) have whipped the country into a political frenzy. This could damage the basic principles that made America great and harm the country’s recovering economy. This will hinder President Trump’s ability to make America great again.
Two-hundred forty years ago, America declared its independence from Great Britain and established our new democracy as a republic. The nation they created enshrined personal freedom and guaranteed all citizens the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in its founding documents.
Just over a century later, the U.S. had become the strongest country on earth. It boasted not only the world’s largest economy, but the most extensive protections of individual liberties. It had become the most influential nation as well. This remarkable new nation leapfrogged ahead of nations that were centuries older.
After its near failure in the Civil War, our system worked well for most people. It faced its failures as Americans fought to improve, which is why our institutions were increasingly adopted by other countries.
The basis for our economic system was that individuals could engage in free exchange in free markets, buying and selling to each other on mutually agreeable terms. They sold their labor in free markets, and were paid the value of their work. The more valuable an individual’s work, the more he or she was paid.
But what about the people who couldn’t or wouldn’t sell work of any value? They would earn nothing and could face disastrous consequences.
Americans are compassionate and came up with ways to deal with this situation. In the 1930s, the U.S. government devised a plan to help those who did not work by taking money from those who did and giving it to those who didn’t. The programs involved started out small. They have grown to uncontrollable and unaffordable proportions.
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid now cost American taxpayers nearly $2 trillion annually, about half of all federal government spending; the cost is growing. Democrats and the MSM want these programs expanded even further, supporting in greater comfort those who do not work. They argue that everyone in the country, citizen or not, employed or not, has a right to the sorts of benefits provided by these programs.
Last November, to the shock of Democrats and the media alike, American voters rejected that premise and elected Donald Trump: not a politician, but a businessman who understood the principles that once made America great. Still reeling from their loss, establishment forces are now determined to do whatever they can to disrupt or terminate the Trump presidency, as evidenced by their nonstop and increasingly violent “resistance” actions.
Trump makes it easy for the MSM. His brutal honesty, impetuous tweets and lack of understanding of the Byzantine political process all contribute to his problems. But those aren’t crimes. The endless agitation by the Democrats and their MSM allies could end up causing severe long-term harm to this country.
The MSM treated President Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton much differently. Today, in their ongoing effort to delegitimize the Trump presidency, they have stirred increasingly violent unrest across the U.S. by exaggerating Trump’s alleged flaws and being less than forthright about his very real accomplishments, especially when compared to their obsequious treatment of Obama and Clinton.
Democratic leadership, with the MSM, have convinced some of the public that Trump colluded with the Russians in order to sway the election in his favor. They also claim Trump gave classified information to the Russians.
But after roughly a year of FBI investigations, there is still no evidence that Trump colluded with the Russians. Similarly, there is no evidence that Trump gave information to the Russians that he had no leagal authority to give them.
The treatment of Obama/Clinton by the MSM/Democrat axis was much different.
A May 25, 2014 headline in the Washington Post claimed, “White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan.” The article explained that the Obama administration exposed a CIA agent, putting his life in danger. There was no outcry. On June 30, 2016, the Post ran another story, “U.S. offers to share Syrian intelligence on terrorist with Russia,” which noted that Obama would give intelligence directly to Russia. Still no outcry.
The Democrat/MSM view of America is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind. Should they prevail, their view of America and the American economy will prolong and worsen the economic stagnation of the past 11 years, which witnessed annual growth of less than 3 percent. That’s the worst American economic performance ever.
Obama’s stagnant economy forced millions of hard-working Americans out of the job market and forced millions more to accept part-time jobs. Obamacare required companies to pay health insurance for any employee that worked more than 30 hours per week. This led to the many social problems that typically arise when there is high unemployment and high underemployment.
Trump wants to make America great again. He will do that by eliminating destructive regulations, lowering tax rates for all Americans, reducing government spending by eliminating many income transfer programs, and by instilling a new “can do” spirit into America. He will emphasize the same individual responsibility principles that our forefathers promoted when this country was founded.
All this will unfold over the next four years, if only “David” Trump can slay the Goliath Democrat/MSM axis just the way he did during his highly successful Presidential campaign.
