US stocks and bonds: Memorial Day 2019 trading schedule

Written By | May 23, 2019

WASHINGTON.  Coming up Monday, May 27, 2019: America’s annual Memorial Day Holiday celebration. On Memorial Day, we remember and honor those brave men and women who, throughout American history have died for our freedom while serving in the U.S. Military. As Memorial Day is celebrated nationwide as a Federal holiday, banks close and trading action in US stocks and bonds takes a pre-summer holiday day off.

The Memorial Day Holiday comes a bit earlier this year than usual. Aside from that, weather permitting, most Americans also tend to celebrate this holiday as the First Day of Summer. Even though summer won’t officially happen until late June. As for stock and bond traders, you’ll likely find that as the current week heads for the long weekend that trading action on Wall Street will tend to get quite erratic. Which it certainly happens to be doing today, as Thursday traders take a decidedly bearish turn, even as other traders are already off to the beaches, or wherever you go to find a traffic jam on the “first day of summer.”.

At any rate, the thinning action leading up to a national holiday often means that when traders return, in this case next Tuesday, they’ll suddenly reverse course. But you never know. We’re tracking Thursday’s action thus far in today’s companion column. So check it out for market sentiment as we approach the weekend.
