WASHINGTON, February 7, 2017 — Donald Trump may be the first president in history who was not granted a “honeymoon” period following his election victory. Not only did he miss the honeymoon entirely, but the opposing party is taking divisive action that is simply contrary to the good of the American people. The Democrats should be ashamed.
President Trump had only two cabinet appointees confirmed by the Senate on Inauguration Day. President Obama had seven. Even though the appointees need only a simple majority for confirmation and the Republicans hold 52 of 100 senate seats, the Democrats have been doing whatever they can to delay the approvals, knowing they can’t stop them.
They say the reason for the delay is to voice their disapproval of the people Trump selected. The Republicans did not approve of President Obama’s appointees in 2009. Yet they realized that the American people had spoken at election time, so they went along and approved Obama’s choices.
These actions by Senate Democrats continue to divide the country and embolden their base, which refuses to admit that the people elected Donald Trump. They still insist that the Russians influenced the outcome and that the popular vote shows that the people really wanted Hillary Clinton.
President Obama helped widen the division between Americans. In 2008, much of the country rejected President Bush’s policies. Obama could have acted early to close the growing divide, but instead chose to widen it. Instead, hIs first major action was to steamroll the Republicans to get the Affordable Care Act (ACA) passed.
Obama did not seek nor accept any input from Republicans. The bill was passed without a single Republican vote.
Next Obama looked at the deteriorating economic condition of the lower class. Instead of recognizing that poverty was increasing and incomes were falling for the lowest income earners, he decided the country had an income inequality problem. He implied that the reason those at the bottom have so little is because those at the top have so much.
His policy to correct this was not to try to provide opportunity for low-income earners to raise their incomes, but rather to blame the wealthy. He raised income taxes on the wealthy by 10 percent and raised capital gains taxes on the highest income earners by a whopping 58 percent. He then re-distributed this income to the lower classes in the form of more food stamps, more welfare and more social programs.
This action served to divide the country further.
Throughout his presidency, Obama blamed the problems of the poor and minorities on the wealthy and white Americans, further dividing the country. He blamed women’s problems on men and the problems of African Americans on white privilege. By the time he left office, Americans were more divided than at any time since the Civil War.
In the eight years since Obama took office, Democrats have lost the presidency, lost control of the House of Representatives and lost control of the Senate. Republicans have governors in 33 states and majorities in 32 state legislatures. The Democrats’ wise move would be to try to unite the country and offer positive solutions to the country’s problems. Instead, they continue to take shameful, divisive actions.
The country has a serious immigration problem. Democrats shamefully resist every action the duly elected President Trump attempts. The nation’s health care system is in shambles with tens of millions of Americans unable to afford quality health insurance of their chosing, yet the shameful Democrats continue to resist Trump’s efforts to find a solution.
The economy has just recorded its 11th consecutive year of growth below 3 percent, the worst growth period in U.S. history. Trump will soon offer solutions that the Democrats will surely oppose, which will divide the country further, even if Trump reaches out to Democrats to become part of the solution.
It is time for Democrats to stop their petty, childish and divisive actions and work to help solve problems which will unite the country. Instead, they are likely to continue to blame Trump for the division. Shame, shame on the divisive Democrats.
