SAN DIEGO, December 8, 2013 – With Thanksgiving falling late in the month, there is a shortened time period for shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which means there is also a shortened time period for shipping your gifts so they arrive by December 25.
The United States Postal Service estimates a 12 percent increase in shipping this holiday season over 2012. It also predicts the single busiest mailing day of the year will be Monday, December 16, with six million customers visiting the nation’s post offices across the country. Be smart and be prepared so you can avoid these lines.
To ensure your treasures arrive in time, know the key holiday shipping deadlines. Communities has listed all key holiday shipping deadlines below for the U.S. Postal Service, UPS, and FedEx. Visit the websites of these services to learn more about specific holiday packing and shipping instructions.
The more you’re willing to pay, the longer you have to get your act together and get your presents bought, wrapped, packed and shipped. International shipping and military mail deadlines come up quickly.
Take advantage of online tools to pay and print shipping labels at home, then schedule a pickup or make a quick drop off at a non-peak time.
Consider shipping and making dropoffs via a UPS Store near you. You can ship via UPS or the U.S. Postal Service at these storefronts. If you are shipping via FedEx, drop off your package at a FedEx-Kinko’s location outside of regular business hours to avoid waiting in line. Most are open until 11 p.m. on weeknights, 9 p.m. on weekends. Limited locations are open 24 hours.

Curious how much emergency Christmas Day delivery would cost you? I priced sending a two pound package from San Diego to Washington D.C. via UPS Express Critical. The cheapest estimate, delivering the package within 20 hours, was $292.49. So don’t procrastinate or it will cost you.
