WASHINGTON, April 21, 2014 – In perhaps the biggest political surprise of 2014 thus far, the Obama Administration has announced another indefinite delay in its final decision to approve or disapprove the construction of the Keystone Pipeline.
If you bought in to the previous sentence…well, you may also want to consider buying a certain New York City bridge we have on offer.
As he punts this decision once again, this time past the next election date this November, the President is already getting key backup assistance from the usual suspects in Congress, including typically false assurances from utterly shameless U.S. Representative and Democrat National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Socialist-FL).
CNBC Money Insider columnist Ben White caught Wasserman Schultz in full Administration spin on Sunday morning’s talk show circuit:
‘As a member of Congress who represents hundreds of thousands of people in south Florida, I want to make sure the right decision is arrived at and that the president makes that decision carefully and doesn’t factor politics into his decision, which I don’t think he is, Wasserman Schultz said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,’ somehow managing to maintain a straight face.
That concluding cynical-but-accurate observation above is White’s, not the Prudent Man’s, FYI.
It’s all about Tom Steyer and November 2014
Oscar Wilde once observed “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” But in this case, rationally speaking at least, the truth of this matter is extraordinarily clear and astonishingly simple.
The Democrats are facing the highest odds of losing the Senate this November since they first managed to win and hold both houses of Congress in 2006.
Having already lost the House to the Republicans in 2010 due to their unilateral imposition of the still-hated Obamacare legislation, Senate Democrats are quietly acknowledging that they’re in serious trouble come this November for the same reason. Plus the IRS scandal. Plus Benghazi. Plus DOJ’s gunrunning efforts. Plus last week’s cattle rustling incident in Nevada, perpetrated by BLM, very likely on behalf of Harry Reid and his son. The list goes on.
In other words, the Democrats can use all the help they can get to hold the Senate this November, and that means money and lots of it. Which, unsurprisingly, gets us to yet another usual suspect, Left Bank hedge fund manager Tom Steyer. Possessed of more dollars than sense when it comes to priorities of the average American citizen, Steyer is the latest super-rich Democrat-Enviro-radical to hold the Nation hostage to this cult’s utopian dream of turning America back over to the animals.
Steyer has pledged the Dems $100 million toward preventing those nasty, Earth-despoiling Republican mouth-breathers from regaining control of the Senate. But like any generous one-percenter, Steyer’s pledge has a price: No Keystone Pipeline.
According to Ben White,
The San Francisco money manager on Friday declared the latest delay ‘rotten eggs’ for pipeline builder TransCanada and ‘good news on Good Friday for those who oppose Keystone as not being in our nation’s best interest.’
Hence, the latest Administration punt on this much-needed, job-creating, nationally important project. Like Deep Throat said in another context, “Follow the money.” (We’ll ignore Steyer’s insulting Good Friday allusion for now.)
The Dems know they need plenty of debased dollars to head the Republicans off at the pass. Likewise, the President as well. He’s fully aware that, with both Houses of Congress under Republican control, his Presidency will effectively end, preventing him from completing his nearly complete job of “fundamentally changing America.”
For that reason, big money pledges like Steyer’s are crucial and must not be jeopardized. So, voilà! Already studied to death and already vetted by State, we have to study Keystone again and open the project up for even more comments. If Beckett were alive today, he might update one of his most famous plays and rename it “Waiting for Keystone.”
More on Tom Steyer, the Democrats’ very own Koch Brother
Adding insult to injury, Steyer has in the past been a huge supporter of fossil fuels, an ironic truth explored in depth by John Hinderaker over in PowerLine.
Steyer claims to be a man of principle who has no financial interest in the causes he supports, but acts only for the public good. That is a ridiculous claim: Steyer is the ultimate rent-seeker who depends on government connections to produce subsidies and mandates that make his “green” energy investments profitable. He also is, or was until recently, a major investor in Kinder Morgan, which is building a competitor to the Keystone pipeline. Go here, here, here, here, here and here for more information about how Steyer uses his political donations and consequent connections to enhance his already vast fortune.
But Steyer’s hypocrisy goes still deeper. Today, he is a bitter opponent of fossil fuels, especially coal. That fits with his current economic interests: banning coal-fired power plants will boost the value of his solar projects. But it was not always thus. In fact, Steyer owes his fortune in large part to the fact that he has been one of the world’s largest financers of coal projects. Tom Steyer was for coal before he was against it.
As evidence for this, Hinderaker points to a report entitled “Hypocrisy & Hedge Funds: Climate Change Warrior Tom Steyer’s Secret Life as Coal Investment Kingpin.” Follow the link above to read Hinderaker’s whole article, which includes this report in its entirety.
Hinderaker’s article as well as the attached report is what we used to call objective truth, something the media has increasingly caused us to lose sight of during this nation’s “fundamental transformation” under Barack Obama.
“What is truth?” It depends…
The truth of what’s going on here is crystal clear. The President and the Democrats will stop at nothing whatsoever to keep their hold on power—particularly power over the ballooning Federal purse, their key tool in buying votes every two years. And a major casualty of this power lust is truth itself.
Those who observed our most recent Holy Week may recall what the Prudent Man has always regarded as one of the Bible’s more enigmatic comments, from John 18:37-38. Jesus says to Pilate, “‘Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Pilate said to him, ‘What is truth?”
That’s a good question in this context. Most of us, the Prudent Man hopes, still believe that there is such a thing as objective truth—a rule, a law, a theorem, a formula, a fact of life that always or nearly always pertains. In other words truth is something that’s provable and usually observable as well.
But something that seems to be getting lost by our increasingly under-educated citizens is that totalitarian, statist parties, particularly those driven today by Marxist-Leninist action plans, have another much simpler definition of “truth.” Truth for them is whatever the Party tells them it is. It matters little if 2+2=4 is an objective, universally accepted mathematical truth. If the Party says 2+2=5, then that’s what it is, and if you object, you’ll be run out of town.
It’s important to understand this distinction between objective truth and Marxist-Leninist “truth.” Perceiving the difference explains with astonishing clarity why the American left can lie early and often without a shred of guilt or without even a hint of having a guilty conscience. The truth for them is no longer something objective and provable. It’s whatever the Party defines it to be. So when they and their Party lie, by objective standards, they are actually telling the truth according to their standards. So what’s the big deal? Get over it.
The National Interest vs. the Democrats’ interests
The President knows that building the Keystone Pipeline is clearly in the national interest. Intriguingly, it’s also clearly in the interest of U.S. and Canadian trade union members who stand to benefit by the substantial number of high-paying union jobs that will result from launching this crucial energy project. The objective truth is that America needs and, more importantly, wants the Keystone Pipeline.
But for the President and the Democrat-dominated ruling class, the overriding truth is that the Party wants to retain power over U.S. citizens forever and must therefore do whatever it determines will help them retain control of that power. At this point, for reasons known only to Democrats and to God, radical environmentalists seem to be key to the retention of this power, so they must be placated at all costs lest this power be lost to the Party.
In the current case, the dominance of the radical environmentalists is crystallized in the take-it-or-leave-it pledge by Steyer. His donation, along with the support of his small but fanatical cadre of fellow environmental extremists, trumps the national interest every time. In other words, it doesn’t matter to these people that ruinously high fuel prices are impoverishing us all. It’s what they want that counts. That’s their truth.
But it’s also why they lie to us 24/7. They can’t handle the objective truth. And they figure, likely correctly, that we can’t handle their Party-approved phony “truth.” So we get the lies instead, with media and academic lackeys and party shills like Wasserman Schultz covering and lying all the way to conceal the objective truth of the Party’s position.
An even more exotic reason to lie: Taqiyya
Obama himself may have been reinforced in this kind of lying behavior by his early Muslim upbringing, something the Administration and the media take great care to downplay. In a fascinating article right here at CDN, Bob Taylor describes the twin Islamic techniques of “taqiyya” and “tawriya.”
Taqiyya is lying. Lying is permitted in Islam when it is used to deceive the enemy or to protect yourself against the infidels. Thus, normative Islam says that duping the enemy is a major facet of jihad.
Duping the enemy. That’s a key concept. But hiding within the notion of “taqiyya” is an even more sinister concept, Taylor observes.
Beyond taqiyya however, there is a corollary known as tawriya which, though lesser known, is perhaps a more dangerous doctrine than its bigger brother. As the prolific Middle Eastern writer Raymond Ibrahim points out, tawriya “allows Muslims to lie in virtually all circumstances provided that the lie is articulated in a way that it is technically true” (emphasis added). In other words, the doctrine of tawriya means that you can say something that means one thing to the listener, but is purposely vague to mean something else to the speaker.
Adding together Marxist-Leninist “truth” and the Islamic concepts of “taqiyya” and “tawriya,” we arrive at the key to understanding the seemingly enigmatic personality of Barack Obama and of his increasingly tyrannical Administration as well. The “truth” for him is his truth, not necessarily provable and not necessarily ours. But it’s of no consequence. Because what Barack Obama says is a law unto itself.
It’s as if we somehow elected the first mullah to hold the White House. It also explains why Marxist-Leninists have such a hard time condemning the behavior of Islamofascists. Their notion of the truth is one and the same.
“Taqiyya” and “tawriya.” The likelihood that this pair of concepts is also in play in the Democrats’ web of lies and deceit provides additional support to back up the reason why these people lie so seamlessly, continuously and shamelessly. As far as the political elite are concerned, truth is whatever these Marxist elitists tell us it is. If we happen to object, that’s our problem, not theirs, and we need to be shamed, humiliated, bankrupted and silenced.
As Bogey once informed Peter Lorre’s sinister character in “The Maltese Falcon,” “When you’re slapped, you’ll take it and like it.” That’s pretty much how these people operate. If you’re not one of them, then you’re a political heathen, a second-class citizen at best, and for that reason, inconsequential and of no importance. This arrogance is beyond contemptible. But it is what it is.
Anti-U.S., anti-business, anti-prosperity
Given what’s transpiring around the world, particularly in Syria, Iran, and the Ukraine, as Putin’s partially resurrected Soviet Union is amply demonstrating today, both the Cold War and the Energy War are being waged anew.
Anyone in a position of political power in this country who consistently thwarts our astonishing new ability to achieve a heretofore-unimagined energy independence is weakening this nation’s ability to confront a ruinously reviving axis of repression and murder based on economic power and energy availability.
Worse still, in a way, the astonishing and ongoing arrogance of this Administration’s perpetual Keystone delay is stifling, in a substantial way, the ability of American business and industry to power an extraordinarily weak recovering into a meaningful increase in working class and middle class jobs.
For far too many Americans, the Great Recession has become Great Depression II largely due to the blindness and fecklessness of a political class that imagines it can redefine once-objective truth into something that more closely resembles their own image and likeness.
It’s time for all Americans to wake up to what’s happening in our own backyards. That includes those who’ve been sitting out recent elections, or, worse, voting for the current Marxist-Leninist crew out of fear of being falsely labeled anything from “racist” to
“global warming denier” “climate change denier.”
The Democrats’ and the Administration’s threats, bullying, and indeed, the outright persecution of opposing points of view needs to be terminated, and soon, or we risk losing everything that generations of good decent Americans fought to preserve for future generations.
As long as statists and totalitarians like Obama, Eric Holder, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and yes, Tom Steyer—the Democrats’ very own Super Koch Brother—retain absolute power over average Americans, business as well as individual finances will continue to erode for everyone in the U.S., save for the Party elites and their supporters in the 1%.
None of these individuals or their supporters has ever been touched by the ravages of our needlessly ongoing economic catastrophe. We need to know why. We need to know the objective truth and not the lies.
