Active Shooting Incident at Capital Gazette, Annapolis, Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, MD: Reports are that one suspect has been apprehended by a canine officer unit, however, Anne Arundel County police Sheriff Bateman has announced on Fox News that there are multiple fatalities following a shooting at the Capital Gazette, a  newspaper located in historic Annapolis, Maryland.

Bateman also says that a suspect is in custody as well as an undefined shotgun.

The first notice of the shooter was an intern tweet from inside the building around 2:50pm EST..


The Capital Gazette is one of the oldest newspapers in the country.

The police also tweeted out:

At least six persons injured, undetermined fatalities

At least six people were injured in the shooting. Live coverage shows that at least one person has been airlifted to a level one trauma center, John Hopkins located in Baltimore, Maryland, Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, and state police, along with officers from neighboring jurisdictions are at the scene in the 800 block of Bestgate Road, near the Annapolis Mall.

Unconfirmed reports are that four of those wounded suffered critical injuries. CBS reports:

Two state police helicopters have been called the scene, and a triage has been set up, SkyTeam 11 Capt. Roy Taylor reports.

Suspicious packages were reported. SWAT officers will conduct a room-by-room search as there are reports that the police are conducting routine searches for additional shooters and possible explosives.

Numerous police departments have responded to the shooting.  Most recent reports are that Prince Georges Fire Department is sending in ambulance and responder units.  A bomb unit has also been dispatched along with the  ATF:

The Capital Gazette is owned by The Baltimore Sun, and reports are that The Baltimore Sun newspaper buildings are also being evacuated.

A reporter at The Capital Gazette reporter Phil Davis, says that multiple people had been shot. Davis also says in dispatches that the gunman shot through a glass window to gain access and begin to shoot multiple people.

“There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.” 

The Capital Gazette building is about five miles from the  Annapolis Naval Academy.
