PHILADELPHIA, May 12, 2014 — Michael Sam made football history by becoming the first openly gay individual to be drafted by the National Football League. The St. Louis Rams selected Sam not because of or in spite of his sexuality, but because he can play football.

While Sam has repeatedly said that he wants to be seen as a football player, some people feel the need to inject politics into everything. President Obama placed a congratulatory call to Sam. In a vacuum, this would be a positive occurrence.

Nothing exists in a vacuum.

President Obama will telephone individuals who fit his narrow ideological agenda, from Michael Sam to Sandra Fluke. One can be sure Obama did not place a Mother’s Day phone call to the four mothers who lost their sons in Benghazi or the mother of the slain Fast and Furious border guard.

Obama defenders will accuse his critics of looking for any excuse to offer criticism, but Obama by his actions provides easy cannon fodder. His words matter because he never matches the rhetoric with reality.

His comment to Sam was telling.

“From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove every day that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”

This statement is 100% truthful. It is also 100% of everything that Barack Obama will never be. Obama is right to praise Sam, but flowery words are what Obama does. What Obama never does is follow the shining examples he touts.

Obama could learn a lot from Sam, but he will not because he is himself.

Michael Sam and Barack Obama were both chosen for their professions with a small minority refusing to accept them for bigoted reasons. Most people had high hopes for both of these men. Sam has a chance to succeed because he knows he has not succeeded yet. Obama failed because he was put into the political equivalent of the Pro Football Hall of Fame before he had played a single game.

Michael Sam has potential, but he has so far accomplished nothing in the world of professional football. Being drafted is nice, but he still has to earn a spot on the Rams roster. He has to make the team. Then he has to be good enough to take the field and play in an actual regular season game. Only then will he truly be a professional football player.

This is why Obama’s words on the subject are antithetical to what makes Obama tick. “…be judged by what you do and not who you are” is what Michael Sam is totally prepared for. It is the polar opposite of how Obama is judged. Michael Sam is a football player first and a gay man second. Barack Obama is a partially black man first and a president far down the line.

Obama’s supporters have never judged him by anything other than his trendsetting skin color. Judging him by his deeds would be impossible because he is not allowed to receive failing grades despite being good at nothing that matters.

Michael Sam is prepared to do the hard work. Obama never was and still is not. His useless slogan of “Yes, we can” turned to chants of “Yes, we did” the moment he won the 2008 election. Winning an election made history, but it did not involve him doing anything. His election was his mere being. Then he was given a Nobel Peace Prize for his mere being. The more liberals worshipped his mere being, the more they excused his inability and unwillingness to do anything.

Michael Sam is a hardworking young man determined to succeed and be judged on his merits. Barack Obama is a lazy, corrupt, cold, indifferent individual who takes umbrage at having to do the work of governing and flashes anger at anybody daring to point this out.

Obama is all about his very being. He has coasted through life like a too cool for school quarterback telling the coach “I got this” despite having never bothered to read the playbook. He prefers playing golf to attending actual meetings. Studying the material is for other people to do. He is too bored to deal with the mundane administrative functions that do not involve public glamour.

Barack Obama has a pen and a telephone, and he insists that he knows how to use them. Calling Michael Sam was a nice thing to do. It was also hypocritical.

Obama is nothing like Sam. Sam will work hard because football is a meritocracy that gloriously rewards the best and ruthlessly punishes the lesser performers.

Obama would not last one day on a football field or in a corporate boardroom. He would never survive anywhere a meritocracy exists. His only hope is that his lack of talent will be repeatedly excused away and his lack of work ethic will be ignored.

If Michael Sam sacks quarterbacks, he will be praised. If he gets pushed around by offensive tackles the way Obama is pushed around by Vladimir Putin and every other world leader, Sam will be properly criticized for his ineffectiveness.

For his unyielding willingness to pursue excellence against long odds, America should celebrate Michael Sam. It should reduce to the ash heap of history Barack Obama and anybody else unwilling to be quiet, put their head down, and just do their job with the expected effort that comes with being a professional.
