Why Bob Beckel’s passionate defense of Christianity is meaningless

Why Bob Beckel’s passionate defense of Christianity is meaningless

WASHINGTON, February 13, 2014 — While many influential Fox News personalities lean right-of-center, Bob Beckel is the top liberal at the dominant news network. An ardent defender of liberal policies and President Obama, Beckel would be a perfect fit for MSNBC if not for his immense likability.

Beckel is not just some talking head, despite his prominent liberal seat on “The Five.” He spent decades in the trenches of American politics. While conservatives tease him for being the campaign manager on the ill-fated 1984 Walter Mondale presidential campaign, Beckel had plenty of wins in his day. A retired NFL player, Beckel is a battle-hardened veteran of sports and political combat.

Beckel is also an anomaly. As the Democratic Party gets swallowed up by secular progressives, Beckel remains an openly devout Christian. Like Beckel’s frequent target President George W. Bush, Beckel credits religion with saving his life and getting him to quit drinking.

On many occasions Beckel has lashed out at radical Islamists for murdering Christians around the globe. He even floats ideas that many liberals would never dare broach, such as limiting Muslim immigration to America and stopping the building of Mosques. He rightfully warns that if radical Islamists do not stop butchering Christians, a backlash would be severe. He wants President Obama to speak out more about the horrors being perpetrated against Christians.

Beckel is a man so sincere that he even honestly admits when he is cynically playing politics with issues. He is a decent, thoughtful man. His passion is heartfelt, and his righteous indignation on the issue of radical Islam is completely justified.

There is just one problem: His words are meaningless.

Word are useless without concrete actions. Beckel keeps saying that if the problem keeps up, “something” will have to be done. While Beckel isolates the problem with precise moral clarity, he refuses to acknowledge the solution.

Islamists desire to murder Christians for one reason and one reason only: They feel like it. They follow through on their desires for only one reason: Because they can.

Islamists are bullies, and the only thing bullies understand is force. The soft power of diplomacy is fine with the Russians, Chinese, and others fueled by cold logical pragmatic reasoning who are unwilling to die. For a genocidal death cult motivated by a corrupted slice of a legitimate religion, hard military power is the only solution.

Beckel can accuse conservative Republicans of playing politics with national security, but Democrats will not stand up to Islamists and the Islamists know it.

If Beckel wanted to stop genocidal murderers, he should have supported George W. Bush’s War on Terror. Beckel wants the Islamists to stop. The Bush Neocons actually did something about it. Overthrowing the Taliban and ridding the world of Saddam Hussein was absolutely the right thing to do. America was on the right track to crushing Islamists.

Then Obama took over and what the late Jeanne Kirkpatrick called the “blame America first” crowd repeated the same mistakes of the Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton years. The Party of FDR, Truman and JFK is dead. Democrats are now more interested in ending wars than winning them. Senator Joseph Lieberman was drummed out of the Democratic Party for supporting the War on Terror despite voting with Democrats 92% of the time. Old-school Democrat Zell Miller derided 2004 GOP presidential nominee John Kerry and the Democratic Party as weak and wobbly. When told Democrats would defend the troops, Miller replied, “With what? Spitballs?”

Beckel believes in the Democratic Party as the party for civil rights, gay rights, union rights, women’s rights and other social issues. Deep down Beckel must understand that none of that matters if innocent people get blown to kingdom come.

The reason Obama does not do anything about murdered Christians is because they are not his priority. He cares about healthcare, education and environmental issues. Foreign policy is a nuisance for him.

George W. Bush understood the problem of radical Islam, so he did something about it. Obama deeply believes that the problem is George W. Bush’s vision, so that is what he spends his time fighting.

Obama chose the Iranian mullahs over the people of Iran during the 2009 Green Revolution uprising. He backed Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Libya and Egypt. He backed down and let Bashar Assad butcher his own people in Syria. He criticizes Jews for building homes in Israel while refusing to condemn Palestinian suicide bombers.

Domestically and abroad, the Obama-Eric Holder-Kerry Democratic Party hides behind “man-caused disasters” and gives Islamist murderers like the Boston Marathon Bomber civilian trials.

Every time the choice was between Western civilization and barbarism, George W. Bush fought for civilization. Clinton and Obama whitewash the barbarism.

If Beckel wants Christians to stop being murdered, then he may have to decide as Joe Lieberman did to support conservative Republicans. Fire John Kerry. Hire John Bolton.

Beckel’s other option is to continue engaging in meaningless bluster, even though the Islamists long ago figured out that when the going gets tough, most liberals turn French.
