PORTLAND, November 14, 2016 — Americans are witnessing some of the collateral damage or fallout from the victory of Donald Trump and the Republican Party over Hillary Clinton and the autocratic ”Democratic” Party.
From last Thursday and extending over the weekend, in downtown Portland, Oregon, chaos erupted as ostensibly peaceable demonstrations against the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States turned ugly. Portland was just one the cities targeted by anarchists in such rioting, but one man was shot just before 1 am on Sunday morning.
Portland police described the shooter as “a thin man in his late teens, 5-foot-8, wearing black, dark hoodie and saggy blue jeans,” and whom civilian witnesses to the sudden shooting described as someone who was with people throwing things at the police and damaging property.
In the fourth day of rioting throughout the nation, the anti-Trump protest in downtown Portland turned extremely violent, despite what a spokesperson from a Portland activist group calling itself “Portland’s Resistance” described as a rally and “heal-in” at Portland City Hall, in order “to discuss its demands for the city and a campaign to repair damage from Thursday night’s riots.” Unfortunately, Portland’s Resistance may be knowingly or unknowingly perpetuating the violence and property damage despite possible genuine intent, but there may be more to the reality than meets the surface for public consumption.
Apparently, interaction and speeches commenced and continued for approximately two hours, and then according to The Oregonian, “at 7 p.m. a group of demonstrators went onto Southwest 4th Avenue, where police in riot gear were blocking the road,” and the police were broadcasting that the demonstrators were allowed to march, but only in an orderly and legally permitted manner. However around 8 p.m., the main body of protesters split up and headed into two different directions, but began moving to create delays for people taking the light rail and local buses, as they dragged metal barricades onto light rail train tracks. As in other riots, the crowd started throwing bottles, shooting fireworks and throwing other projectiles at the police, as they openly taunted them. At one point, even a news crew was attacked.
According to both Portland police as well as Portland’s Resistance, the violence was being instigated by a “smaller, separate group.” Sadly, according to The Oregonian, many of the more reasonable demonstrators were “trying to get anarchist groups to stop destroying property” and the ‘anarchists’ were refusing to do so. Incredibly, one of the more instructive of the speakers allowed to speak at the Saturday rally was Armeanio Lewis, 20, a local anarchist who defended the rioters. He had an interview with OregonLive.com reporters, that provided much insight into the rioting
Lewis explained, “No matter what, we all have our own individual expressions towards the rage we feel to the creeping fascist threat in America in this age. And so my message was to not tell other people what to do. Don’t hand a pacifist a rock and expect them to bust a window. But don’t take the hammer away from a … black youth expecting them to be peaceful when Nazis are going to kill them.”
Lewis seemed to be proud that Portland was now on the radar of the entire world, which was a statement that drew applause, but calls for peaceful protest from the crowd.
“We got international news because of the riot,” he said. “We have been highlighted as a city that will absolutely refuse Donald Trump and every step he takes, and that is a glorious thing. And that’s because of the riot. The riot opened this dialogue for this group to be here tonight and gain popular resistance.”
