Samantha Power question: What if Daniel Pearl were gay or black?

LOS ANGELES, February 26, 2014 — Once again, an Obama appointee hostile to Israel has openly shown that hostility. Once again, the politically liberal Jewish community has greeted contemptible anti-Jewish remarks with muted silence by. Once again, the criticism that liberal Jews drink out of the Obama family dog’s water dish is demonstrated to be as valid as it is disturbing.

Samantha Power is the current Ambassador to the United Nations, an organization known for hating America and Israel while elevating genocidal dictators to respectable committee positions. The U.N. specifically singles out Israel for mythical human rights violations, even though it is a democracy that defends the rights of women and gays, and even though it is surrounded by Arab and Muslim dictatorships which often torture and murder their own gay, female, and minority populations.

The U.N.’s critics have frequently accused it of replacing rational legitimate criticism with anti-Semitism. President Obama has been insensitive to Israel, and his appointment of Power as U.N. Ambassador sent shivers up the spines of Israel’s friends. Her recent comment on Twitter about Daniel Pearl validated this concern.

Pearl was the Wall Street Journal reporter who had his throat slit by 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed. Pearl’s last words were “My mother is Jewish. My father is Jewish. I am Jewish.”

Power tweeted, “Daniel Pearl’s story is reminder that individual accountability & reconciliation are required to break cycles of violence.”

Anyone who has spent any time in politics knows that “cycle of violence” is code to equate terrorist attacks on Jewish civilians with military strikes against terrorists. It is a vile term that no other culture or ethnicity ever has to tolerate. It is applied specifically to Jews, and more importantly, against Jews. It is designed to make palatable the murder of Jews.

At worst, Power is an anti-Semite. At best she is totally ignorant of world history and is as unqualified as Obama’s nominee as ambassador to Norway to hold her position.

Would Power have dared make such a callous remark if Pearl were black?

Would James Byrd, the innocent black man dragged behind a pickup truck and lynched by whites, be part of a “cycle of violence”? Surely he struggled to avoid being set on fire.

What if Daniel Pearl were gay?

Would Matthew Shepard, the gay man beaten to death, be accused of being part of a “cycle of violence”?

What if Daniel Pearl were female?

Would a female sexual assault victim or a battered housewife who shoots her male aggressor be part of a “cycle of violence”?

Never. Every other community has effective advocates who stand up for their people, even when they are wrong.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will defend innocent black victims like James Byrd and phony black non-victims like Tawana Brawley.

The GLBT community would defend Matthew Shepard no matter the truth of his murder. They properly defend real victims in their community.

Women have advocates like attorney Gloria Allred, who can leap past ambulances in a single bound. Allred has defended many female victims, some of who really were victims.

The politically liberal Jewish community effaces its Judaism when it conflicts with liberalism. However, to castigate the liberal Jewish community in this case would be to do what Power did. Blaming the victim does not help.

The solution is to do what liberal Jews refuse to do, to explain to Samantha Power what it means to be a decent human being. The truth needs to be repeated until even a United Nations Ambassador can understand it.

There is no “cycle of violence” involving Israel and the Palestinians. The Palestinian leadership is led by murderers who want to control all of Israel, rename it Palestine, and wipe every Jew from the planet. Israel is led by Jews who want to defend themselves from being obliterated.

Israel captured the land that the Palestinians improperly refer to as “occupied territories.” Arabs were given some of the land, and they waged several wars to take all of the land. Israel won the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a war it never wanted. It is building housing settlements on lands it owns. Even if one accepted the notion that building these houses was illegal, there is no moral equivalence between Jews building houses and Palestinians blowing them up.

One could slip further down the slope of moral bankruptcy and claim that Jews building or defending their illegal houses were fair game. That still does not justify the killing of Daniel Pearl, who was an American reporter with no role in the conflict. He was killed for being Jewish, and nothing more.

The lesson of Daniel Pearl is the exact opposite of what Power said. The way to end wars is with overwhelming violence. Wars end when one or both sides know they cannot win. The way to spread real peace is for the strongest militaries to make the cost of waging future wars unbearable. Then securing and maintaining the piece requires making sure that people of moral fiber are in positions of authority.

To truly break the cycle of violence, the United Nations should be defunded and Samantha Power should be removed as ambassador. Any person or organization who earns a living blaming Jews for trying to stay alive is unfit to be part of the global diplomatic community.

Those who disagree should see what Power would say if Pearl were gay, black, or female. She would say nothing, which is what she should say on every issue concerning Jews going forward.
