PHILLIPS: Obama’s plan to “do something” about conservative media

WASHINGTON, May 8, 2014 –  Presidents and the media have always had a love / hate relationship. The Obama Administration has always been very open about their disdain for conservative media and are well known to punish media they do not control. Now there is a new push to regulate the media that should chill all Americans. The Chairman of the Federal Election Commission has warned in an interview that there is a push to bring conservative media sites such as The Drudge Report and conservative talk radio shows like Sean Hannity’s show under the jurisdiction of the Federal Election Commission.

Commissioner Lee E. Goodman stated:

“I think that there are impulses in the government every day to second guess and look into the editorial decisions of conservative publishers. The right has begun to break the left’s media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications.”

The theory they want to use is to declare targeted conservative sites and shows to be Political Action Committees. As PACs, they would be subject to the rules and regulations of the Federal Election Commission. These shows and sites would have to file disclosures as to resources and income. They would be restricted on what they could say or print and would be subject to fines or even criminal prosecution if they violated some of these rules or laws. No reporter for these media would be able to protect their sources. According to Geoffrey King, internet advocacy coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists:

“Journalists are being caught up in what is, I think, fairly characterized as a rapidly growing surveillance apparatus, and this is happening all over the world. In the past years, tactics have shifted from surveillance of individual terrorists and spies to a dragnet approach to control information.”

President Obama promised to run the “most transparent” administration in the country’s history however according to a February report from Reporters without Borders, the US fell from 32nd to 46th place in the 2014 World Press Freedom Index, a drop of 13 slots. While the left loves to remind people that Barack Obama was a “Constitutional Law Professor,” apparently Obama, and every other lawyer in the administration, was asleep the day they taught the First Amendement in law school. The First Amendment to the Constitution is quite specific:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

If the First Amendment does not do it for you, how about the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights that says:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.

There is a range within the spectrum of political beliefs where freedom and liberty live and thrive. Get outside of that spectrum and you have dictatorship and tyranny. This is why our Founding Fathers, and the United Nations, have both held freedom of expression, and the presses right to enjoy those freedoms unencumbered by governmental oversight, in such high regard. Our founding fathers knew the value of an independent press. There is a reason why the first step every dictatorship takes is to dismantle any free or opposition press. Benjamin Franklin, the first champion of a free press famously wrote:

“Printers are educated in the belief that when men differ in opinion, both sides ought equally to have the advantage of being heard by the public; and that when Truth and Error have fair play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter.”

If a Republican President tried to put the liberal media under FEC there would be wall-to-wall media coverage demanding impeachment. CNN would even smore time on it than they do on the missing Malaysian jetliner. America teeters at the edge of the abyss. A free society must have a free press. The fact that Obama has the free press in his crosshairs says a lot about the future he wants for America. The left, the Democrat Party, is no longer a part of a free society. They do not want freedom and liberty. They want tyranny. Barack Obama and his cronies want to control the media. The reason is simple to deduce: The left can never win an argument as long as there is an alternative when people don’t like their ideas. They do not trust Americans, as Franklin said they would, to read alternate opinions and reach a decision. Because when people are allowed to choose, they choose freedom and liberty. Obama and the left want to destroy the ability of Americans to choose.

Judson Phillips
Judson Phillips is the founder of Tea Party Nation, one of the largest Tea Party Groups in the country and the number one national tea party site on the Internet. A lawyer by profession, Judson has been involved in politics since his teens. “Ronald Reagan inspired me,” he says. Judson became involved in the Tea Party movement in February 2009 after hearing Rick Santelli’s rant on CNBC. “I heard there was going to be a Tea Party in Chicago inspired by Santelli, but didn’t know if anyone was doing a rally in Nashville where I was based. Finally I emailed Michelle Malkin and asked her if there was a Tea Party in Nashville. Malkin sent an email back saying, ‘No, why don’t you organize one?’ I did.” The first Tea Party in Nashville was held late February 2009 which drew a crowd of about 600. Judson then organized the Tax Day Tea Party in Nashville, which drew over 10,000 people into downtown. It was at this time that Tea Party Nation was formed. Later that year, Judson decided to bring activists from across the country together, so he organized the first National Tea Party Convention in February 2010, which featured Alaska’s former Governor and Republican Vice Presidential Nominee, Sarah Palin as it’s keynote speaker. He currently manages the Tea Party Nation website, writes several daily columns and is working on more projects than any one person should. He is a frequent guest on cable and broadcast news shows, including on Fox, MSNBC, CNN and others.
