Mark Steyn: The heart of the Trump – Carson Muslim controversy explained

Though Trump and Carson are diametrically opposite of Obama, challenging the president with obvious truths should be applauded rather than criticized.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 24, 2015 – When it comes to political humor with bite, nobody does it better than Mark Steyn. While most of us wring our hands at Washington’s inability to govern, the conservative Canadian commentator makes us laugh, even in the most trying situations.

Referring to the recent Trump/Carson Muslim controversy, which has to be a “—gate” of some sort, Steyn writes,

Why does one Republican candidate’s “scandal” get hung around the neck of every other guy’s? I’ll answer your question to me about Donald Trump’s “gaffe” after you ask Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Lincoln Chafee and Joe Biden about Hillary Clinton’s server and how she handled Benghazi. Till then, get lost.

American mainstream media is now in full “gotcha-mode,” where every Republican candidate is asked the question du jour about the scandal of the moment, while Hillary, Bernie and Joe skate.

Liberals and mainstream media attacks Dr. Ben Carson

Suddenly the press is hung up on a comment at a Trump rally about Obama’s Muslim tendencies as though the president has never done anything to perpetuate that notion.

  • Who bowed in submission before the Saudi King?
  • Who was a member of Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church, which condemned America and Christianity and professed Marxism for two decades?
  • Who completely reformatted the national healthcare system and exempted Muslims from paying penalties? Who made apology after apology for the United States while traveling in the Islamic world?
  • Who put Muslims in high positions in Homeland Security? Who refused to condemn the Fort Hood murderer as an Islamic terrorist?
  • Who said that NASA’s “foremost mission” is an outreach to Muslim communities?

That would be President Barack Obama. And the above represents just a partial list of what this country has endured throughout his administration.

As Steyn points out,

…this particular president has compared the members of the loyal opposition to terrorists and to the more hardcore Iranian ayatollahs. And none of you media bigfeet huffing and puffing about lèse-majesté gave a crap about that. So, if you’ll forgive me, as someone designated a terrorist and ayatollah by Obama, I’m disinclined to rise to defend the President’s amour propre.” The faux outrage against Donald Trump and Ben Carson from the media and Hillary Clinton serve only to magnify their hypocrisy and lack of comprehension of Islamic ideals. In the former First Lady’s case, it demonstrates that she learned nothing during her tenure as secretary of state other than how to create an erroneous “reset” button. As many have said, “Flying around the world in a jumbo jet is not an accomplishment.”

Referring to the audience member who called Obama a Muslim at the Trump rally, Steyn said, “I’m supposed to point out to this guy in New Hampshire that the president is not a Muslim but a Christian. Well, his father and step-father were both Muslims, which means, as far as Islam is concerned, he was born a Muslim. Has he renounced it?”

“As to whether he’s a Christian, have you asked him whether he has attended even semi-regularly any church other than that of Jeremiah (“God damn America”) Wright?” queried Steyn. “Whatever the president’s personal faith, there is no dispute that his leadership of the western world has been an utter catastrophe for Christians around the planet. Some of the oldest Christian communities on earth have been entirely extinguished on Obama’s watch.”

Steyn’s points are valid. Yet few within the journalistic world dare suggest that Barack Obama has, like the plagues of Egypt, given us seven years of bad karma.

Pope Francis and President Obama: Fundamentally changing the world

In his own narcissistic, egomaniacal mind, Mr. Obama truly believes he has been one of the best presidents in history. He believes that because he has accomplished much of what he set out to do, “fundamentally change America.”

The question now is whether whoever follows can reverse that course to some semblance of sanity.

Though Trump and Carson are diametrically opposite of Obama, challenging the president with obvious truths should be applauded rather than criticized.

Writes Steyn,

…instead of jumping through your preposterous hoops and speaking up for the most powerful man in the world, I would rather speak up for the powerless – for the Nigerian schoolgirls, for the Yazidi, for the Copts in Egypt, and for all the other beleaguered Christian communities in the world this feckless president has set alight and watched burn.

In conclusion Steyn admonishes the media in terms that make the word “blunt” seem tame by comparison:

This kind of super-fake-o lame-ass nothing controversy that you dowager duchesses of the press are having the vapors about is precisely why the political process has fallen into such disrepute and your own industry is bankrupt. No real person cares about this “scandal.” So, unless you’ve got a question about the economy or immigration or something real, screw off outta here.

In seven short years our country has become an “Obama-nation.”
