Gun-free zones and Ft. Hood: Yet another failed liberal policy

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2014 — On Wednesday, Army Specialist Ivan Lopez went on to the U.S. Army post at Fort Hood, Texas and began shooting.  When the shooting stopped, there were four dead, including Lopez.

The pathology of the shooting was like far too many others. Lopez was on anti-psychotic medications. He took a gun to a gun-free zone, started shooting at people who could not shoot back, and when he was confronted by armed law enforcement, he took his own life.

This is a repeat of Columbine and Sandy Hook and other mass shootings.

No one knows when the next person on anti-psychotic drugs will snap, but we do know that when they do snap, they are not totally irrational. None of these shooters goes to a gun range or a police station to start shooting.

They choose gun-free zones, and that is why gun free zones are another failed liberal policy. How many people have to die before this insanity ends?

Law-abiding citizens follow the law and don’t bring guns to gun-free zones. When someone is planning homicide, a minor technicality like a gun-free zone isn’t a deterrent; it is an encouragement. It is a flashing neon sign that tells a shooter, “this is a target rich environment, and no one can shoot back.” Patrons at the local Walmart, just down the road from Fort Hood had more protection than American soldiers did because at Walmart, Texans can carry their guns.

When asked whether the Army would consider relaxing prohibitions against soldiers carrying guns on posts, a spokesman said that was not being considered.

Increased car searches are being considered. After all, that worked so well to stop Ivan Lopez.

The designation of American military posts as gun-free zones started with President Clinton. President George W. Bush could have changed that and did not, but Nidal Hasan did not attack Fort Hood until 2009, when President Obama was in the Oval Office.

Now there have been two fatal attacks at Fort Hood.  What is the Obama Administration’s response? It is to keep our military defenseless.

Most members of the military are trained to use firearms; it comes with the job. Because of the threat of terrorism, every soldier, sailor, airman and marine should be issued a sidearm when they report for duty every day.

Gun-free zones are a lie. They are another failed liberal policy and people die because of them.

Liberals demand that perfectly good policies be abolished so their failed ideas can be implemented.  When are Americans going to demand that this failed policy be abolished?

How many more people must die? How much more blood must be on Obama’s hands before a change is made?

Judson Phillips
Judson Phillips is the founder of Tea Party Nation, one of the largest Tea Party Groups in the country and the number one national tea party site on the Internet. A lawyer by profession, Judson has been involved in politics since his teens. “Ronald Reagan inspired me,” he says. Judson became involved in the Tea Party movement in February 2009 after hearing Rick Santelli’s rant on CNBC. “I heard there was going to be a Tea Party in Chicago inspired by Santelli, but didn’t know if anyone was doing a rally in Nashville where I was based. Finally I emailed Michelle Malkin and asked her if there was a Tea Party in Nashville. Malkin sent an email back saying, ‘No, why don’t you organize one?’ I did.” The first Tea Party in Nashville was held late February 2009 which drew a crowd of about 600. Judson then organized the Tax Day Tea Party in Nashville, which drew over 10,000 people into downtown. It was at this time that Tea Party Nation was formed. Later that year, Judson decided to bring activists from across the country together, so he organized the first National Tea Party Convention in February 2010, which featured Alaska’s former Governor and Republican Vice Presidential Nominee, Sarah Palin as it’s keynote speaker. He currently manages the Tea Party Nation website, writes several daily columns and is working on more projects than any one person should. He is a frequent guest on cable and broadcast news shows, including on Fox, MSNBC, CNN and others.
