CHICAGO, August 18, 2014 – As CNN newspeople put on gas masks and kevlar vests, Ferguson is erupting into chaos. Earlier tonight there were hundreds of peaceful protests, and many of those person left and the police presence far exceeded the number of protestors. Suddenly agitators began dragging objects into the street to create a barricade, possibly to stop armored carrier vehicles. Journalists have been hit with the tear gas, and a group are behind a concrete wall as gun shots have been heard.
Steve Kastenbaum is confirming that Moltov cocktails have been thrown and the protestors are pushing port-o-potties into the street as barriers.
An Albuquerque photographer, Leo, got hit with tear gas saying that the police responded to the protestors throwing water bottles with the tear gas and stun grenades. Jake Tapper states the people in the crowd attempting to provoke the police are from out of town, as well as the neighborhood, they are in the minority. The photographer Leo states that the people of Ferguson have been “great” to him, giving him water, rides, and assistance.
Leo feels that the people of Ferguson are upset because they have long been harassed by the police in Ferguson. “Walking home from the grocery store, on the way to work, and they are stopped.” Michael Brown is not the cause of the unrest, his death is the flash point that is causing the people of Ferguson to finally stand up.
The CNN team is being affected by tear gas, being overcome by the tear gas. They are pointing out that people who want to leave cannot because the police have them completely encircled.
Police are saying over the bullhorn that everyone, but Credentialed Media, must disperse or they will be arrested. Police in gas basks and helmets have their guns drawn and are taking an aggressive stance.
And they are moving in on the protestors in a unified line and the image is absolutely heartbreakingly difficult to watch.
Police are asking media to clear the area as there has been a gunshot victim; and they are breaking down and moving out of the area. Reports are that police began to move forward on the protestors after they attempted to burn a business, there were shots fired, resulting in a shooting, and bottles were being thrown at the police.
They have cleared the area because there was a shooting and the assailant is unknown and at large.
