LOS ANGELES, July 11, 2017 – The International Olympic Committee has awarded two host cities the Summer Olympics. It’s unclear which city Paris or Los Angeles will host 2024 or the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Paris is believed to be the city to host the games in 2024, while Los Angeles is expected to be awarded the Summer Games in 2028.

The two cities must agree on a hosting arrangement by September 13, or only the 2024 Games will be awarded. Representatives for the Paris and Los Angeles bids made formal presentations to Olympics officials on Tuesday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

IOC officials have said that awarding the two games at the same time would streamline the selection process and provide better financial stability to the games. Hosting the Olympic Games guarantees a host city to incur massive debt and cost overruns.

The last time two Olympic hosts were determined at once was in 1921, when the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Games were awarded, according to Olympstats.com. The U.S. would host its first Olympics since 2002 (and first Summer Games since 1996). Paris would host for the first time since 1924.

The U.S. has now ended its longest drought between hosting an Olympics since the 28-year gap between 1932 and 1960. The U.S. failed in securing a bid for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

LA and Paris were the remaining 2024 finalists after Boston, Hamburg, Rome and Budapest dropped out. Paris and Los Angeles are being seen as cities that can reform the Olympics, by using existing and temporary facilities which could reduce prohibitive costs in hosting the Games. Paris still has to shell out money to build housing for athletes and the news media, which is expected to cost $2 billion.

The Los Angeles delegation has offered to house athletes in existing dorm rooms at U.C.L.A. The decision by the IOC brought a sigh of relief after it was humiliated when Boston, the initial American choice to host the 2024 Games, withdrew its candidacy in 2015.
