SILVER SPRING, Md, February 20, 2014 – Poppy was a pig with big dreams. She wanted to be a star. First she tried ballet, but she was not graceful, and the dance instructor told her to try something else. Next she tried singing, but she could not carry a tune and was told to try something else.
Then Poppy tried to be a runway model, but she tripped on her fancy gown and was told modeling was not for her.
Through each disappointment her parents, grandparents and best friend were there to support her and cheer her on. With each rejection came the praise and mantras of “Follow your dreams!,” “You go girl!” and, “Dream big, pig!”
Poppy kept falling, but she was determined to make her dream come true. Poppy practiced until, not only could she stay up right, but she could also swirl, spiral and jump. Before long, people started to watch her skate, and then more people. As the audience cheered her on Poppy knew her dreams had come true.
Dream Big Little Pig! written by Kristi Yamaguchi and illustrated be Tim Bowers is a fun story for children that teaches the important lesson of perseverance. Despite prior failures, Poppy never lost her dream, and when she found her passion in skating, she worked hard to get better.
Through not giving up despite her initial challenges, Poppy was able to realize her dream. This message is important to children in a culture where trophies for participation are the norm. It will help them realize that they do not have to give up just because they do not succeed the first time.
The publisher recommends this title for ages 4-6, but it is appropriate for 3 year-olds as well. The text of the story is simple, so younger children will not have trouble understanding. It also makes this a quick read.
Author Kristi Yamaguchi knows about dreaming big and succeeding. She is the 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist in Ladies Individual Figure Skating.
Illustrator Tim Bowers studied at the Columbus College of Art & Design. He has provided the artwork for dozens of children’s books.
