Why not launch the New Year by letting God help you make your resolutions?
WASHINGTON, January 5, 2016 — You start each year with an earnest commitment to do and be better. You make resolutions that you hope will make you a better, happier person this year. But how did that work out for you last year? Why not launch the New Year by letting God help you make your resolutions?
Many of the resolutions that we make are focused on improving daily routines. They often deal with weight loss, better health, kicking bad habits or saving money. Do these sound familiar? Of course they do; you can even throw in being a better parent or spouse or nailing a job promotion.
Carefully and sincerely examine what your resolutions mean to you and just how seriously you respect your commitments to yourself. That’s what a resolution is: a commitment to yourself. This year, if you don’t want to breach your contract with yourself in the 30 to 40 day lifespan of most New Year’s resolutions, turn to the only one who can guide you to make you commitment unbreakable.
Consider how the Bible addresses resolutions. It considers them as a directives from God. “To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power.” (2 Thessalonians 1:11)
Your resolutions begin by accepting God as your partner in contract and as the judge of the contract’s worth. Understand that you are not perfect, so do not commit yourself to pursue resolutions that you know you cannot keep. Forgive yourself each day if you falter, because you are imperfect, and you would have no need for resolutions if you were perfect.
God has already acknowledged your failure and still loves you. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
How wonderful is that? By allowing God’s love and forgiveness to guide you each day, you never are left with the feeling of failure.
Each moment, day, week or month is actually an opportunity to devote yourself to your contract resolution. It is truly your personal gift to yourself. When you resolve to do your best, even if you feel you are not meeting your goals for that day, week or month, your life and your next attempt matter to God.
Your resolution by God’s grace remains intact, because his Holy Spirit remains intact within you. 1 Corinthians 3:16: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” Your resolution cannot be broken because it cannot be measured in broken attempts but is one continuous unchangeable commitment to a loving God whose Holy Spirit guides you.
Make 2016 your breakable resolution year as you develop your list of resolutions. Keep and embrace God’s love for you and resolve to keep his gift as your special grace to empower your resolutions. Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”
This is your year so make your 2016 resolutions the best that God’s love, grace and guidance can make them for you!
