LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20, 2015 – On May 23, The beloved Reading Rainbow launched “Skybrary,” a web-based digital library with access to unlimited books and 150 new and classic field trips for the adventurer in all of us. The Skybrary is an inviting and competitive way to engage young minds for children from 2 to 9.
Years ago when there were five channels on tube television, children of the 1980s and ’90s eagerly awaited a few favorite shows, and Reading Rainbow was on the top of their list. The multicolored rainbow, exciting field trips and comforting stories captured the hearts and minds of eager preadolescents across the country for decades. Sadly, over time it was pulled from the air.
Now as those children have children of their own, they can pass down their love for reading with ease with help once again of Reading Rainbow and Levar Burton’s new website.
By a hot-air balloon of course! First your children establish who they are, create their back pack, pick their likes and dislikes from a various categories and then instantly they’re off into a great big library world full of adventure.
As they navigate from island to island the music plays in the background and is reminiscent of the classic TV show with a new twist of whimsy. Once you choose an island, it takes you to a scrolling bar of books and videos. When children pick a book it is checked into their backpack, available for them to read at any time. To keep the children’s attention certain pages of each book have an interactive feature. When they’re done it tallies their book totals and allows parents to check their children’s stats.
Thanks to the overwhelming number of Reading Rainbow fans, Burton was able to earn 600 percent of his desired goal on Kickstarter.com and raised $6.4 million. And in May of 2015 Burton, Wolfe and the RRKidz team launched their website as promised.
The Skybrary is available now on readingrainbow.com and offers a 14-day trial. You can then purchase a one-month plan for $9.99, a six-month plan for $29.99 and a $49.99 annual membership. It’s a great gift for any child who loves to read and a great tool to encourage your child to read.
