SAN DIEGO, June 8, 2014 – The ninth episode from each of the three previous seasons on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” have produced the biggest spectacles and surprises. In Season 1, it was the beheading of Ned Stark. In Season 2, it was the Battle of Blackwater. Last season, it was the infamous “Red Wedding.”
Viewers could be forgiven for thinking last week’s Episode 8 was actually Episode 9 after the gruesome death of Prince Oberyn, resulting in the death sentence of Tyrion Lannister. Just as everyone has managed to scrape themselves off the floor by now, it would follow that everyone better brace for impact in anticipation of seeing Tyrion executed Sunday night.
Not quite yet. As we know from the HBO preview and interviews with the producers, most of Episode 9 in Season 4 will be devoted to another of the epic battles in “Game of Thrones.” This time it’s the Battle at Castle Black, the last stand against the wildling hoardes led by Mance Rayder.
One of our few remaining heroes, Jon Snow, has repeatedly warned the leaders of the Night’s Watch to prepare for this onslaught. Will they be ready to face the free folk, Thenns, and an even more initimidating threat yet to be unveiled?
We know from photos and the preview we will see Ygritte in this episode. Will there be a reunion between Jon and Ygritte? As the preview says, “Love is the death of duty.” Ignore this bit of foreshadowing at your peril.
Author George R.R. Martin was quoted by Entertainment Weekly as saying this battle dwarfs the Battle of Blackwater, which is considered among the most spectacular action sequences ever produced for television. If you don’t recall it, do yourself a favor and watch it again before Sunday’s episode. GoT fans, if you love action sequences you have a lot to look forward to Sunday.
An added note for those mourning Prince Oberyn: actor Pedro Pascal will appear in the role of a DEA agent in the upcoming Netflix series “Narcos,” the true story of the rise of the Colombian cocaine cartels run by Pablo Escobar and law enforcement efforts to take them down. Pascal will play Javier Peña, a Mexican DEA agent sent to Colombia to kill Escobar. It will debut next year. No spoilers here: the real Peña is still alive and well, retired in Houston.
