SAN DIEGO, May 20, 2014 – The judges scores are so close, the fans will decide the winner of Season 18 of “Dancing With The Stars.” Among those remaining in the competition, Meryl Davis and Maks Chmerkovskiy and Amy Purdy and Derek Hough are in a statistical dead heat.

The third competitor, Candace Cameron Bure, is quite a bit behind. It’s not impossible for her to win, but her fans would have to vote in huge numbers to overcome the point spread.

Fans have a big decision. Which freestyle dance routine do they like better? Do they think a non-dancer should win? Or the best dancer, whether or not she has dance training? Does the entire body of work count? Should improvements and skill development over the season matter? And can you judge the entire body of work?

There isn’t a right or wrong answer.

Both these women are deserving. On tonight’s finale, the three remaining couples will perform a 24-hour instant “fusion” dance, combining two dance styles in a quickly created routine.

Tonight’s scores aren’t likely to make a big difference. It’s simply a show filler and fan pleaser.

One of the three couples will perform their freestyle routine as an encore, as selected by fans voting via Twitter hashtags. Viewers also get to see the live “Team Loca” dance that was never performed due to the back injury to Amy Purdy.

Live performers include hot ticket singers Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea. There should also be appearances by most of the Season 18 competitors, who were all in the ballroom cheering on the finalists on Monday night.

Whoever wins will be deserving. Just making the final is a major victory for Candace Cameron Bure. Performing as she did and overcoming obstacles is also a victory for Amy Purdy.

But the Mirror Ball Trophy should belong to Meryl Davis for the magic quality of her dancing, and in the way she brought the very best out of popular, temperamental pro Maks Chmerkovskiy. He’s been trying to win for many seasons, and it seems this will be the season for him.

Or it should be.

A side note: Tonight Meryl and Charlie White will be dancing together, a first for the duo who won Ice Dancing competition Gold in Sochi.

Communities Digital News will host its final DWTS Live Chat of the season tonight. Be sure to take your seat in the virtual ballroom with us to enjoy and comment on all the performances.

The show is one hour later at 9 p.m ET.

Who will win the Mirror Ball Trophy? As we like to say, if you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain.
