Hough's athleticism and talent have kept him a winning fan favorite for the last 15 seasons

WASHINGTON, April 21, 2015 – Dancing With The Stars fan favorite Derek Hough found himself in the emergency room on Monday night after suffering an injury during rehearsals for the show’s 10th year anniversary special.

The ABC show has been on the air, producing two seasons per year since 2005. Two hundred and twenty three celebrities have danced in hopes of winning the mirror ball trophy.

The dancer was working with former partner Maria Menounos when he was inured.

Ballroom dancing, a la Dancing with the Stars, is an incredibly athletic sport. Fans watching the show have every week have gotten a first hand look at exactly how demanding it is.

Using stop motion capture technoplogy, professional “Dancing With The Stars” duo, Edyta Sliwinska and Alec Mazo created the following video that outlines just how physically demanding and athletic ballroom dancing is.

Note that a professional dancer doing Jive can reach foot speeds of 15MPH. A professional dancer spins at 180 RPM a rate that is four times the speed of a record player spinning.

During this season, in addition to Hough, dancers Patti LaBelle suffered a knee injury, Willow Shields suffered a rib injury during rehearsals, and Hough’s partner, Nastia Liukin suffered a wrist injury  – all in week two. Bachelor star Chris Soules suffered an injury in his calf during week five dress rehearsal.

One reason watching weekly is so addictive is seeing the dancers skills, and ability, increase.

After watching the video the physical demands and athletic ability of ballroom dancers cannot be denied and you have to appreciate not only the pros, but the stars that manage to keep up with them.

Mark Ballas, along with his dad, pro dancer Corky Ballas, and his girlfriend, singer Britney Jean Carlson, took Hough to the hospital where Mark Ballas sent out the social media message:

“Long night in the ER with @derekhough nothing worse than seeing a fellow dancer get hurt especially your brother,” Mark captioned an adorable pic of him pushing Derek in a wheelchair. “But he had me @bcjean & @corkyballas there by his side. #fam.”

Recent reports are that Hough may have injured both his feet and on a posting to Instagram he said “Just getting home from the hospital. Not the best of news. I’m in utter disbelief.”

Sources say that last night Hough broke his toe and sprained his ankle, with possible ligament damage.

An MRI is schedule for today to see just how serious the injury to his ankle is, and results of that are that he may have injured both feet and/or ankles. We will watch for updates..

This is not the first injury for the very talented dancer, but it may be the most difficult for him to recover from, though recover he surely will.

He also suffered a shoulder injury in 2012.

Hough is a five time winner of the Dancing With Stars Mirror Ball, winning in seasons seven with Brooke Burke; 10 with Nicole Scherzinger, 11 with Jennifer Grey, 16 with Kellie Pikcler and 17 with Amber Riley.

Hough is dancing with Olympic gymnast  Nastia Liukin this season performing a striking Tango last night to Calvin Harris’ “Summer”.

This season is fiercely competitive  with both Rumer Willis and partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Riker Lynch  (who is

a cousin to Hough and his sister, DWTS judge Julianne Hough) partnered with pro Allison Holker all being eyed as potential trophy winners.

And then there is Willow Shields, age 14 and the youngest competitor, dancing with Hough’s BFF Mark Ballas, who are surprising both fans and judges every week.

Dancing With The Stars sends a couple home from Spring Break Week

Hopefully Hough’s decision to dance in season 20, despite his grueling schedule working in LA on the show and then returning to New York where he is practicing with his partner as well as performing as male lead in New York Spring Spectacular, did not add to his injury.

The New York Spring Spectacular, on hiatus at this time unrelated to Hough’s injury, returns to the stage on May 3 with an all star cast including Tony winning-actress Laura Benanti starring as the female lead, Jenna, Whoopi Goldberg voicing the Statue of Liberty, Bella Thorne as the voice of the Alice in Wonderland Statue, with celebrity cameos by Carmelo Anthony, Donald Trump, Martha Stewart, Henrik Lundqvist and many more.

At this time, ABC is not making comment as to who will dance with gymnast Nastia Luckin next week, or for the remained of the season, as Hough recuperates.
