For traders who still haven’t headed off to the beach, here are the stock, bond and option trading and settlement hours and dates for the upcoming Memorial Day Holiday.
WASHINGTON, May 27, 2016 – The Memorial Day Weekend has arrived. The Maven and Mrs. Maven are not headed for the beach this weekend, but it seems as if everyone in the DC Metro area took off for Maryland’s Eastern Shore Thursday night, given the volume of traffic. Perhaps it was the same in the New York Metro area, meaning trading volumes will be super-light Friday as they were on Thursday.
Whatever the case, holidays alter regular trading and settlement hours on Wall Street—i.e., the times when you can get your money after a trade or when you have to pony up if you executed one. So here’s the information on Memorial Day 2016 trading.
Finally let’s all remind ourselves, lest we forget: Take at least a moment this weekend to remember all the service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice so that Americans could remain free. Even though the country is currently in a mess, our brave veterans, past and present always stood and still stand ready to defend us. So let’s say “Thanks” to a soldier this weekend and remember those brave vets from this country’s noble past.
Stocks and options will trade during normal trading hours, 9:30 a.m. through 4 p.m. EDT. However, bond markets will close early Friday at 2 p.m. EDT. Orders placed after 2 p.m. in fixed income markets will be entered on the next business day, which is Tuesday.
All U.S. markets (equity, option, and fixed income) will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day, including pre- and after-regular market trading. Some brokerages may be open Monday for conducting other business. Check with your broker to confirm.
U.S. Stock Trading Settlement Dates
Settlement dates for U.S. equity (stock) trades are as follows:
- Trades you’ve already made on Wednesday will settle on Tuesday.
- Trades you’ve already made on Thursday will settle on Wednesday.
- Trades made today, Friday, will settle Thursday.
Canadian and World Market Trading
Canadian markets are open on U.S. Memorial Day, May 30, 2016. But if U.S. traders place new orders for Canadian-traded or listed stocks after the U.S. market close today (Friday), they will route to Canadian exchanges for execution on Tuesday.
Those who trade in other global markets should check with their brokers today to see how trading and settlement hours may be affected on specific world exchanges.Click here for reuse options!
